Watch for missing water meter lids
Tacoma Water recently has experienced a rash of
water-meter-lid thievery. Since last fall, more than 1,000 aluminum meter
lids have gone missing. Most of the lid stealing is in Tacoma, but it occurs
throughout Tacoma Water’s service area and in areas served by neighboring
water utilities.
-
Missing meter lids are expensive. It costs about $100
in materials and labor to replace each missing meter lid — costs that
Tacoma Water customers end up paying. Costs can be even higher if thieves
or vandals damage the concrete water meter box or the meter, or if the
missing lids allow dirt and debris to enter the box and damage the meter.
-
Replacing meter lids diverts Tacoma Water employees
from needed work on the 1,300-mile system of water mains.
-
Missing meter lids can be a public safety hazard as
well.
Report missing water meter lids and suspected theft
or vandalism of Tacoma Water property to Tacoma Water at
(253) 502-8344 (24 hours
a day). Write down a car license number and descriptions of the vehicle
and people involved if possible. Tacoma Water will replace lids right away,
even on weekends.
It is likely that meter lids are being stolen for the
value of the aluminum. Tacoma Water is working with recyclers and local
police agencies about the problem.
